Calendar quarters explained
A calendar quarter divides the year into four roughly equal periods of three months each. Q1 runs January through March, Q2 covers April through June, Q3 spans July through September, and Q4 closes the year from October through December.
Quarters are used heavily in financial reporting, project planning, and database schemas. A common source of confusion is the difference between a calendar quarter — which always starts in January — and a fiscal quarter, where the company's financial year may begin in any month. If your organisation's year starts in October, their Q1 runs October–December, not January–March.
