Public holidays and business days
A business day in Ireland is a weekday that isn't a public holiday. On a public holiday, banks, government offices, and many businesses close, and staff are entitled to a paid day off or an alternative. People check for everyday reasons: a SEPA transfer that only settles on working days, a delivery window, or a "within X working days" deadline.
Ireland has ten public holidays: New Year's Day, St Brigid's Day on the first Monday of February, St Patrick's Day (17 March), Easter Monday, the first Mondays of May, June, and August, the last Monday of October, Christmas Day, and St Stephen's Day (26 December). When Christmas Day or St Stephen's Day falls on a weekend, a substitute weekday is given, and this checker follows it.
A note on Good Friday
One point that catches people out: Good Friday is not an official public holiday in Ireland. Many banks and schools close by long-standing custom, and pubs were once required to shut, but legally it's a normal working day — so this checker counts Good Friday as a business day. St Brigid's Day, added in 2023, is Ireland's newest public holiday and the first named after a woman.

Frequently asked questions
Is today a public holiday in Ireland?
The checker above gives an instant yes or no for today or any date, using Ireland's ten public holidays. A weekday that isn't a public holiday is a business day.
Is Good Friday a public holiday in Ireland?
No. Good Friday is not an official public holiday in Ireland, even though many banks and schools close by tradition. Legally it's a working day, so this tool counts it as a business day.
When is St Brigid's Day?
St Brigid's Day is observed on the first Monday of February (or on 1 February when it falls on a Friday). Introduced in 2023, it's Ireland's newest public holiday.
Do Irish banks close on public holidays?
Yes. On public holidays, banks close and business-day processing pauses, so SEPA and other transfers resume the next working day — the usual reason a payment takes an extra day around a holiday.
How many business days are in an Irish month?
Usually 20 to 23, depending on weekends and any public holidays on weekdays. Because several Irish holidays are fixed to Mondays, they reliably remove a working day from those months. The checker shows the exact count.
