Public holidays and business days
A business day in New Zealand is a weekday that isn't a public holiday. On a public holiday, banks, government offices, and most shops close or run reduced hours, and staff who work are entitled to extra pay and a day in lieu. The usual reason to check is a bank transfer that only settles on working days, a courier estimate, or a deadline counted in business days.
The nationwide public holidays are New Year's Day and 2 January, Waitangi Day (6 February), Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day (25 April), the King's Birthday in early June, Matariki, Labour Day in late October, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. New Zealand "Mondayises" some holidays — when they fall on a weekend, the day off moves to the following Monday (or Tuesday), and this checker follows those observed dates.
Matariki and regional anniversary days
Two things make New Zealand's calendar distinctive. Matariki, the Māori New Year, became a public holiday in 2022 and moves each year with the lunar calendar rather than sitting on a fixed date — this tool uses its gazetted date. Separately, each region observes its own Anniversary Day (Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury and others on different dates); those are regional, not national, so they aren't part of the nationwide answer shown here.

Frequently asked questions
Is today a public holiday in New Zealand?
The checker above gives an instant yes or no for today or any date, using New Zealand's national public holidays. A weekday that isn't a public holiday is a business day.
What is Mondayisation?
If certain public holidays fall on a weekend, the paid day off transfers to the next available weekday — usually the following Monday. This tool uses the observed (Mondayised) dates, so they match when workplaces actually close.
Why does Matariki change date each year?
Matariki follows the Māori lunar calendar and the reappearance of the Matariki star cluster, so its public-holiday date shifts from year to year. The checker uses the officially gazetted date for each year.
Are regional anniversary days included?
No — Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury and other anniversary days are regional holidays on different dates, so they aren't part of the nationwide answer. Add your region's anniversary day for a complete local calendar.
How many business days are in a New Zealand month?
Typically 20 to 22, depending on weekends and any national public holidays on weekdays. The checker shows the exact count for any month you choose.
