Is Today a Business Day in the United States?

Get an instant answer for any date, with the US federal holiday calendar built in — plus the next holiday, next business day, and how many business days are left in the month.

What counts as a business day in the US

A business day in the United States is any weekday — Monday to Friday — that is not a federal holiday. People usually check because something only happens on working days: an ACH bank transfer that won't post over a holiday weekend, a shipping estimate, or a "within 5 business days" deadline. On a federal holiday, banks, government offices, and the bond market close, and most of the country treats it as a day off.

There are 11 federal holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. When one lands on a Saturday it is usually observed the Friday before, and when it lands on a Sunday it moves to the following Monday — this checker uses those observed dates, so it agrees with the day your bank actually closes.

Federal vs. state holidays

The answer here uses federal holidays, which is the calendar banks and national markets follow. Individual states add their own — Patriots' Day in Massachusetts, the day after Thanksgiving in many states, and others — and some widely observed days like Good Friday are holidays only in certain states, not nationwide. If your working calendar depends on a state holiday, treat this as the federal baseline and layer your state's days on top.

Frequently asked questions

Is today a federal holiday in the US?

The checker above gives an instant yes or no for today or any date you pick, using the 11 US federal holidays. If today is a weekday and not a federal holiday, it is a business day.

Is Good Friday a business day in the US?

Yes, at the federal level — Good Friday is not a US federal holiday, so banks and federal offices are open. Some individual states and the stock market treat it differently, but nationally it counts as a business day.

What happens when a federal holiday falls on a weekend?

It is observed on the nearest weekday: a Saturday holiday is observed the Friday before, and a Sunday holiday the following Monday. This tool shows the observed date, matching when banks and offices actually close.

How many business days are in a US month?

Usually 20 to 22, depending on weekends and whether a federal holiday falls on a weekday. The checker shows the exact count for any month, with federal holidays already subtracted.

Do US banks follow federal holidays?

Yes. The Federal Reserve observes all 11 federal holidays, so ACH transfers, wires, and check clearing pause on those days and resume the next business day. That is why a transfer started before a holiday weekend can take an extra day.
